What We Believe

What about our doctrine at Glad Tidings?

We embrace seven Affirmations outlined in Ephesians 4:1-6 to maintain unity in our doctrine.  An outline for the Affirmations was written down by the Apostle Paul under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit in Ephesians 4:1-6. They reflect what was likely the refrain of a first century hymn. They may have served as an authoritative guide to govern the core beliefs of the early church, so they also have great value for the Church today.

At Glad Tidings we base the unity of our doctrine upon these seven Affirmations.

Core teachings like these were not determined by any one denomination, organization or movement throughout church history. The stream of truth they share is the result of Jesus Christ himself, Head of the Church, who revealed to us the truth through his earthly ministry (Matthew 14:6, 1 John 2:6, Hebrews 1:2 and 2:3-4) and by the outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon his elect Apostles and Prophets (Galatians 1:11-12 and 2 Peter 1:16-21).

Each of these affirmations presuppose a firm belief in the authority and accuracy of Holy Scripture, Hebrews 4:12. The Affirmations relate the importance of core truth to secure unity in fellowship (John 17:6-10, 2 Timothy 2:2, 1 John 1:5-7) but they permit diversity and freedom in personal convictions (Romans 14-15:6). The main things are the plain things of our Christian confession. Core truth encourages dialogue over differences without casting guilt or condemnation on those who hold their faith differently. They encourage us to practice Christian charity, seek personal growth, and limit the spread of extreme teachings, fads, and heresies. Core truth cannot be increased or diminished without peril to the soul: Hebrews 6:4-12, Jude 4-7.

These “Affirmations of Our Unity” as we have stated them make no claim to verbal authority or to be without flaw. The confession of these truths are stated differently by others, but the truths they teach must never be denied. Nor do these seven affirmations contain ALL truth, but simply affirm core truth which has been consistently shared by the faith of millions throughout the ages of historic Christianity.

Affirmations of Our Unity

    1. There is only one Body of Saints called the Church and Christ Jesus is the Builder and Head of it.
    2. There is only one Spirit by whom we are rescued from sin, regenerated within, raised to life, and reconciled with the Father. By the Spirit we are born into the family of God, empowered for service, and equipped with supernatural gifts. By Him alone can we manifest the fruit of Christ’s character.
    3. There is only one Hope to which we have been called, while together we await the appearing of our God and Savior Jesus Christ and our resurrection to eternal life with Him.
    4. There is only one Lord who is worthy to reign over all the earth and heavens. Every knee will bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is LORD to the glory of God the Father.
    5. There is only one Faith bringing salvation by the grace of God. The Lord’s Supper is a perpetual memorial proclaiming our shared faith in the substitutionary work of Christ, the power of His gospel, and the prophetic glory of His coming Kingdom.
    6. There is only one Baptism confirming our union with Christ, His atoning death, the power of His resurrection, the Authority of Jesus’ name, and our participation in His Church.
    7. There is only one God and Father of all people by whose sovereign pleasure and power we live, are loved, saved, granted eternal life, and adopted into the inheritance of His Beloved Son, Jesus.
